Tattoo Aftercare
Tattoo aftercare is crucial to prevent infections, promote proper healing, and maintain the vibrancy and clarity of your tattoo. Getting a tattoo involves breaking the skin's surface, creating open wounds that must be carefully managed to avoid bacteria, allow the skin to heal without scarring, and ensure the ink remains bright and sharp for years to come.
Immediately After Your Tattoo
-
Your artist will clean and dress the tattoo with either:
-
Second skin (transparent adhesive film) – a sterile barrier that protects the tattoo for several days.
-
Cling film – a temporary covering that should only be used short-term.
-
If Cling Film is Applied
-
Keep it on for no longer than 24 hours.
-
After removal:
-
Wash your hands.
-
Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free, antibacterial soap (using hands only).
-
Pat dry with a clean paper towel or allow to air dry.
-
Begin the moisturising aftercare routine (see below).
-
If Second Skin is Applied
-
Keep the film on for 3–5 days, unless it leaks, peels away, or causes discomfort.
-
During this time you can shower normally, but avoid soaking (baths, swimming, saunas).
-
Do not scratch, peel, or lift the edges of the film.
-
Fluid/ink under the film is normal.
Removing Second Skin
-
Wash your hands first.
-
Gently peel the film away under warm running water, pulling it back slowly over itself.
-
Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap.
-
Pat dry with a clean paper towel or let air dry.
After the Film or Cling Film is Removed
-
Apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare balm or fragrance-free, breathable moisturiser.
-
We love Hustle Butter Tattoo Cream (purchase online) or you can buy Bepanthen healing cream from your local chemist.
-
Repeat 2–3 times daily until healed (around 2–4 weeks).
-
Do not over-moisturise – the skin should feel supple, not smothered.
What to Avoid During Healing
❌ Do not pick, scratch, or peel scabs or flakes.
❌ Do not expose the tattoo to direct sunlight or tanning beds.
❌ Do not soak in baths, hot tubs, pools, or open water.
❌ Do not apply petroleum-based ointments, scented lotions, or harsh creams.
❌ Do not wear tight or abrasive clothing that rubs on the tattoo.
❌ Do not allow pets, dirty hands, or unwashed fabrics to touch the tattoo.
❌ Do not over-moisturise – this can suffocate the skin and delay healing.
Long-Term Care (After 4 Weeks)
-
Keep skin healthy by regularly moisturising with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion.
-
Always protect your tattoo with SPF 30+ sunscreen when exposed to sunlight.
-
Avoid tanning beds – UV light fades tattoos quickly.
-
Staying hydrated and moisturised helps your tattoo look vibrant for years.
When to Seek Advice
-
Ongoing redness, swelling, or heat after 3–4 days.
-
Pus, unusual odour, or spreading rash.
-
Allergic reaction to adhesive (rash or blistering around the second skin).
